Alice Owen Williams

Born in Boston and raised on the Cape, Alice was graduated from Bridgewater State College, where she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Alice taught English for 35 years. She started her career in Japan, where she taught for the U.S. Air Force Dependent Schools, and then returned to the Cape to teach at the Brooks School for Boys in Harwichport.

Alice spent the majority of her teaching career, however, in the Barnstable public system at both the junior and senior high schools. At Barnstable High School, she developed the Shakespeare and the journalism courses, and she leaves behind a large family of beloved former students.

A patron of the Globe Theatre in London, Alice had a lifelong love of Shakespeare, but she was also passionate about local arts and culture. She wrote reviews and handled the publicity for a number of local theaters and was a columnist for the D-Y Register and the Cape Cod News in the 1970s. Later, she served as the editor of Cape Arts magazine and the secretary of the Mid Cape Cultural Council.

In retirement, Alice was a volunteer at and a trustee of the Centerville Public Library. She established and operated the used book store, which continues to provide additional funding to the library. For many years, Alice touched the lives of residents and visitors to the Cape with her love of books.
